Back to Civilisation, visiting Sermiligaaq
Spending the night stuck in an ice-sheet turned out more difficult than predicted. After just four hours, the sheet had broken free and the sheet with us in it started drifting dangerously close to shore. So, at 6 o’clock in the morning on July 22nd we fired up and left the bay heading for our first piece of civilisation.
On this day, our sail down to Sermiligaaq, the settlement furthers north on the east coast, was easy for a change. With little to no drift-ice, just beautiful icebergs.
As we got closer, we could see all these small colourful houses pup up in the horizon.
From our previous trip to Greenland, that time on the southwest coast, we were greeted by a lot of children at the dock, and of course they were really curious.
Sermiligaaq is one of the smaller settlements on east Greenland and it lives about 150 people there. A drop from 250 only ten years ago.
When we went ashore, we were surrounded by children and a couple of them gave us tour of their town.
After our visit, we still had a lot of day left. So, we decided to keep on moving, and we stumbled upon something we didn’t expect. But more about that in our next post.
